Coastal Carolina University's held a commencement ceremony for an estimated 390 candidates for graduation Aug. 4, 2017, at the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center on campus. In his remarks, commencement speaker John Hutchens, biology professor and ecologist, encouraged graduates to take time in the future to interact with nature and with other people. "In today's high tech world we are often racing along at breakneck speed, but being outside slows you down and allows you to experience the rhythms of nature," said Hutchens. "You can actually hear yourself think and you can be a part of something bigger than yourself."

On May 21-22 at the Producers' Club Crown Theatre, 13 students (some of them now alumni) acted or worked behind the scenes in "Scenes, Songs, and Monologues 2017." Directed by Jerry Winters, the production was a compilation of short works, including contemporary and classical texts, original dance and songs from Broadway musicals.

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.
Eastern students are encouraged to complete hours of service learning for certain classes.
